This is a gem tintype (ferrotype).
Gem sized tintypes first appeared in
1858. They are very small (usually 3/4 to 1 inch wide) and
were made for use in lockets, broaches, and small albums
where several could fit on one page. They were the most
prolifically produced form of photograph in the 1860's in
America.
This tintype is an example of extreme damage. It had
corrosion spots, missing places, and scratches on the
surface.
The tintype was scanned at a very high resolution. The
corrosion spots and scratches were repaired and the missing
places were filled in. The extra space at the top was
removed. The high resolution scan allowed the image to be
resized to produce a larger size picture. Copies were then
shared with other family members and the original is now
safely stored away.
This photograph was damaged in several places and was
stained. It also had glare from the flash of the camera.
The damage was repaired and the stains were removed. The
glare from the flash was corrected
